Normally I'm someone who simply lugs a backpack around, because I have a laptop to carry, among other cumbersome things like schoolbooks. I'm at the opposite end of the evening bag market - let's just say that. But my mother bought me a sling bag that suddenly made me look like I just stepped off the pages of some yuppie fashion magazine, and it miraculously managed to fit all the things I normally have to carry and then some - talk about usefulness! It's a black leather bag from Warehouse - an English brand - with snappy brass-coloured zips and an abundance of pockets for all my odds and ends like my Tube card, student card, coins, pens, and keys. There's also plenty of space for my books, a laptop and even a lunchbox! The best thing about this bag is that it was on sale, and so my mother obtained it for the princely sum of 40 pounds - which, let me say, is an extremely good deal when it comes to shopping in London. I own very few bags, and this is one I'm going to be using for many, many years to come. |

My daughter reminds me that we all have individual tastes in fashion. Her love of the miss grant range for example is different to her friends. As for myself, I like to keep things simple. There are many things that people prefer when they decide about what they put in their wardrobe but I personally prefer, for a hot summer day, a black t-shirt, because it is the normal thing to wear while it's hot outside and it complements my style, I've never been the kind of person that wraps himself in thick clothes. The thing that really works great with a t-shirt is a pair of Metallica shorts, because I'm a fan, some Patrol shoes, along with a wristwatch, maybe not a Rolex, because I'm not that into them, but something that matches my other clothes' color. At winter, of course I wear something appropriate for the weather and the outside temperature, I wear a winter jacket, some lined pants to keep me warm along with some winter boots and a hat or something that would protect my ears from the cold. Nevertheless, I like looking whether it's summer or winter. |

Before I became pregnant I had some favorite foods. While I was pregnant I could not eat any of these foods, the main thing being onion rings. After I had my daughter my tastes for everything changed. It seemed from the time I was in maternity clothing onwards signalled a new palate of tastes for myself. I still could not enjoy onion rings but for some reason had a craving for new and spicier foods. My pregnancy also seemed to change my overal persona. Before I had my daughter I was a care free spirit and after I had her I found myself thinking of things I was doing that I no longer wanted to. I even changed the way I dressed because I felt the need to be a rolemodel. I now dress more conservatively and my vocabulary is a lot cleaner. It is amazing how one tiny being can make you want to change so much. I was lucky enough to experience a pregnancy with very little drawbacks and was able to have just the good and fun parts of being pregnant. My morning sickness was rare but my joys were not.

The two of us were meant to be together, I could tell. There I was, kind of bohemian, a little DIY, like if hippies were fashionable, my sister likes to say. And there, nestled in velvet, among a few hundred other pieces was the elephant ring. It called out to me. It was perfect. I'm a lover of jewellery - from the gold diamante ring I own to bracelets to tiaras....to this particular elephant ring. It was the flea-market find you dream about: genuine vintage, totally wearable, unique. The elephant ring was silver the delicate little animal was cute, lifelike, with a little red inset stone on its back. I didn’t bother haggling: I wanted it. I paid the vendor and we went our separate ways. He was satisfied, I was enraptured. I don’t think I didn’t wear that ring a single day in the next month. It was a trademark, for a little while. It worked its way into every outfit, a hint of gaudy when I was being professional, a little whimsy when I was trying to be serious. But even true love fades, and where is the elephant ring now? Next to the pearl earrings, among other things once beloved, now tired of. |
